A Note from ChelseyI wasn't part of the downtown run, so Broadway was a brand new territory for this production. It's been the most humbling and exciting piece to work on — it constantly challenges the concept of theater.
I also feel incredibly lucky to be folded into ballroom culture in this way. Teaching the cast how to vogue still feels surreal to me, but dance is a universal language, and it can be taught, understood, and felt. Especially with voguing it being an expression of true emotions.
These cast does not mark. Period. 10s across the board every single time, and that's just the culture. I've learned so much about the queer community, the ballroom community and bringing these communities to a shinning light is an honor.
You think of where ballroom came from — the history of the houses, Madonna, Paris Is Burning — I find myself pinching myself when I am surrounded by icons of the ballroom and theater community. André De Shields, Junior LaBeija and Leiomy just pure royalty in the room. People who are genuinely the best at what they do. That's a privilege.
