Carmen
THe Metropolitan Opera
A Note from ChelseyThis was one of the biggest projects of my career thus far— and a total bucket list moment as a New Yorker, to work at The Met. It was my first opera and my first time working on an all-female creative team. It was also one of the fastest processes I've experienced at that scale.
The production was genuinely controversial and didn't get reviewed well, but I stand behind every creative choice that was made. We were taking a classic and recontextualizing it similar to a revival on Broadway— bringing domestic violence to the forefront in a way that didn't sit easily with traditional Met audiences.
The design was stunning. Tom Scutt did the set, and it was really out of the box — Carmen had tattoos on her thighs, and the whole visual language was bold and innovative.
